Getting Started with Projects

Enterprise applications use multiple databases and models to fulfill their various requirements. In erwin Data Modeler (erwin DM), you can bring all these data models together and manage the application as a single project. You can organize these models using folders and subfolders and store the entire project in a single location in erwin Mart or your local machine. Additionally, you can handle the collective metadata of the application together instead of managing multiple individual files.

Projects eliminate the need to load all your required models separately. When you open projects, all models in them are opened together.

All physical and logical models in the project are organized in a hierarchy in the Project Explorer pane. Project Explorer also provides you with various options to manage your projects. To familiarize yourself with the Project Explorer, refer to the Project Explorer topic.

Using projects in erwin DM involves the following steps:

  • Creating projects
  • Adding folders
  • Adding models (Creating models, importing models, deriving models, etc.)
  • Managing models (Renaming, deleting, saving to mart, etc.)
  • Generating forward engineering scripts
  • Generating reports

To see how to create and manage projects in erwin DM, refer to the Creating Projects topic.
